WESTWAY FLYOVER, A40, KENSINGTON AND CHELSEA, GREATER LONDON. Four police officers talking with the leader of the demonstrators protesting against the opening of the Westway Flyover.
Acklam Road was the focus of protests against the Westway by local residents. Houses along one side of the street had been demolished to make way for the flyover and at a reception held earlier that day at the Lords Tavern, George Clark, leader of the residents social rights committee, had presented their objections to the Minister of Transport and representatives from the Greater London Council. By September, the GLC had promised the residents that they would be rehoused. The photograph was taken near grid reference TQ

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in the negotiations between protesters and authorities during the construction of the Westway Flyover in Kensington and Chelsea, Greater London. Four police officers can be seen engaged in conversation with George Clark, leader of the residents social rights committee, who is representing local residents protesting against the opening of the flyover. The image provides a glimpse into the intense emotions surrounding this controversial project. Acklam Road had become a focal point for protests as houses were demolished to make way for the flyover. Earlier that day, at a reception held at Lords Tavern, Clark had presented their objections to key figures such as the Minister of Transport and representatives from the Greater London Council. By September, promises were made by GLC officials that rehousing would be provided for affected residents. This photograph was taken near grid reference TQ2618481667 and serves as a powerful visual reminder of an era marked by passionate activism and significant urban development. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection, this image not only documents an important chapter in London's transportation history but also highlights how people's voices can shape policy decisions. It stands as a testament to both peaceful protest and dialogue between opposing sides during times of change and progress.
