M6 Motorway, M6, Madeley, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire. A view of the construction of the Birmingham to Preston Motorway (M6), looking south-west at Waltons Wood near Madeley Heath and showing workers standing besides pipes stacked in the foreground.
The work on the Birmingham to Preston Motorway (M6), between junctions J13 to J16 started in June 1960 and was carried out by John Laing Construction Ltd. This section at Waltons Wood presented geological problems for the construction team with an embankment failing when severe slipping occurred in 1961. By October 1963, remedial works on the embankment were completed

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of the iconic M6 Motorway. Taken in the 1960s, it showcases workers standing proudly beside neatly stacked pipes at Waltons Wood near Madeley Heath in Staffordshire. The Birmingham to Preston Motorway project was undertaken by John Laing Construction Ltd. , and this particular section presented unique challenges for the team. The image offers a glimpse into the immense effort required to build such an essential transportation artery. The workers' presence emphasizes their dedication and expertise as they navigate through the demanding geological conditions of this specific area. It is evident that every aspect of this construction process was meticulously planned and executed. Notably, this photograph also highlights one of the setbacks faced during construction when severe slipping caused an embankment failure in 1961. However, with determination and skill, remedial works were completed by October 1963. As we admire this historical snapshot, we are reminded of how infrastructure projects like these shape our society's progress. This image serves as a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance while showcasing both the challenges faced during construction and triumph over adversity. Overall, A© Historic England Archive has captured not only a remarkable moment but also an important chapter in British history - one that forever changed our nation's road network.
