Widening the M1 JLP01_10_10855
HERTFORDSHIRE. Slipform paving machines laying a road surface during widening works on the M1, showing concrete being tipped into the machine in the foreground.
Starting in 1981, widening work was carried out on the M1 between Junctions 5 (South Watford) and Junction 8 (Hemel Hempstead). The aim was to convert the
existing two-lane carriageways from Junctions 5 - 7 and three lane carriageways from Junctions 7 - 8 into three lanes southbound, three lanes northbound from Junctions
5 - 6, and four lanes northbound from Junctions 6 - 8

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in the widening works on the M1 motorway in Hertfordshire. The image showcases slipform paving machines diligently laying a new road surface, with concrete being poured into the machine in the foreground. The photograph takes us back to 1980s when this ambitious project began between Junctions 5 and 8 of the M1. The objective was to transform the existing two-lane carriageways from Junctions 5-7 and three-lane carriageways from Junctions 7-8 into a more efficient and spacious roadway system. This involved creating three lanes southbound, three lanes northbound from Junctions 5-6, and an impressive four lanes northbound from Junctions 6-8. As we gaze at this snapshot frozen in time, we can't help but appreciate the magnitude of construction taking place. The slipform paving machines stand tall as they work tirelessly to lay down fresh concrete, symbolizing progress and modernization. This photo not only documents an important chapter in transportation history but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination. It reminds us of our constant pursuit for better infrastructure that enhances connectivity and improves travel experiences for generations to come. Thanks to Historic England Archive's preservation efforts, we are able to glimpse into this significant moment where roads were widened, shaping our present-day highway network.
