Construction and the old cathedral JLP01_08_057564

COVENTRY CATHEDRAL, PRIORY STREET, COVENTRY. A view looking south-west over the ruins of the Cathedral Church of St Michael from the roof of the new Coventry Cathedral, showing part of the construction site in the foreground adjoining the old cathedral.
Following the bombing of Coventry Cathedral in November 1940, a competition was launched in 1950 to find a design for a new cathedral. The winning design was by Sir Basil Spence (1907-1976) from one of over 200 designs submitted. Building work took place between the mid-1950s and 1962. Queen Elizabeth II laid the foundation stone on 23th March 1956

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the juxtaposition of construction and history in Coventry. The image showcases the ruins of the Cathedral Church of St Michael, a poignant reminder of the devastating bombing that occurred in November 1940. However, amidst these remnants, hope rises from the ground as part of the new Coventry Cathedral takes shape. The photograph offers a unique perspective from the roof of the new cathedral, looking southwest over both sites. In the foreground, we see a bustling construction site where workers diligently labor to bring Sir Basil Spence's visionary design to life. Their efforts symbolize resilience and renewal after tragedy. The building work depicted in this image spanned several years between the mid-1950s and 1962. It was an ambitious project that aimed to create a beacon of faith and unity for future generations. Queen Elizabeth II herself laid its foundation stone on March 23rd, 1956, marking an important milestone in Coventry's history. This print not only captures architectural marvel but also serves as a testament to human determination and spirit. It reminds us that even amidst destruction, there is always room for rebirth and progress. As we gaze upon this scene today, it stands as a powerful symbol of hope rising from ashes – an enduring legacy for all who visit Coventry Cathedral.
