EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the grandeur of Bridgewater House, located in Westminster, London. Before the outbreak of the First World War, this magnificent residence boasted the most exquisite private picture gallery in all of England. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, visitors were granted access to this remarkable collection after submitting a written application beforehand. The photograph specifically captures Lady Ellesmere's Boudoir, a space that remained off-limits to the public whenever the family resided within its walls. The focal point of this opulent room is a circular painting by Raphael titled "Madonna with the Palm Tree" which now finds its home on display at Scotland's National Gallery. Adjacent to it stands another masterpiece by Raphael called "The Madonna del Passeggio". Both paintings exude an aura of divine beauty and grace. To complete this breathtaking scene, a studio copy of Raphaels' renowned work "Madonna with the Blue Diadem" adorns the left side of Lady Ellesmere's Boudoir (the original can be found at Louvre Museum). This meticulously captured photograph was taken between 1890 and 1914 by Newton and Co. , offering us a glimpse into Bridgewater House's rich artistic heritage. It serves as a testament to both architectural splendor and artistic excellence that once graced one of London’s most prestigious residences.
