EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic Woolworths store on Fawcett Street in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. Standing proudly with its classic Art Deco facade, this building holds a rich history within its walls. Originally opening its doors in 1923 as store number 144, it quickly became a beloved shopping destination for locals. The striking red and white color scheme of the exterior adds to the timeless charm of this establishment. The addition of the Art Deco facade in the 1930s further enhanced its architectural beauty, making it an eye-catching landmark on Fawcett Street. Sadly, after serving generations of shoppers for over eight decades, Woolworths closed its doors in 2004. However, it found new life when transformed into a Primark store shortly after. In recent years, fashion retailer Flannels has taken up residence within these historic premises since 2016. This print not only showcases a piece of local history but also serves as a reminder of how buildings can evolve and adapt to changing times. It stands as a testament to the enduring legacy that Woolworths left behind and continues to be cherished by those who remember strolling through its aisles searching for treasures from yesteryears.
