Wicker man, 1st century AD, (1832)

Wicker man, 1st century AD, (1832). A large figure of a man, constructed from flexible sticks, being filled with people prior to being set on fire. Julius Caesar reported the Druids, the priests, teachers and judges of the Celts, making human sacrifice to their gods in this way, although there is little other evidence to suggest that such rituals actually took place. The Druids were suppressed by the Romans around 50 AD. (Colorised black and white print)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of history - the Wicker man, believed to date back to the 1st century AD. Constructed from flexible sticks, this imposing figure stands tall as it is being filled with people before its fateful destiny: being set ablaze. Julius Caesar himself reported that the Druids, revered priests and teachers of the Celts, practiced human sacrifice in this manner as an offering to their gods. However, while evidence supporting such rituals remains scarce, it is undeniable that these practices were part of ancient British culture. The Romans eventually suppressed the Druids around 50 AD, marking a significant shift in religious beliefs and practices in Britain. This colorised print offers a glimpse into an era when concepts like sacrifice and paganism held great significance for our ancestors. As we observe this image today, let us reflect on how far humanity has come since those ancient times. We can appreciate the strides made in understanding different religions and embracing diverse spiritualities without resorting to extreme measures like sacrificial rituals. This photograph not only captures a moment frozen in time but also serves as a reminder of our collective journey towards enlightenment and tolerance. It allows us to explore our roots while appreciating how much progress we have made as a society over centuries gone by.
