EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic Westminster Bridge and St Thomass Hospital in London, dating back to 1887. Designed by Thomas Page, this magnificent road bridge was completed in 1862, becoming an integral part of the city's landscape. Standing proudly next to it is St Thomass Hospital, originally founded in 1109 but relocated from Southwark to the South Bank in the 1860s. The hospital buildings were meticulously designed by Henry Currey and opened with great ceremony by Queen Victoria herself in 1871. Notably, these structures incorporated Nightingale Wards, a revolutionary concept at that time. Inspired by Florence Nightingale's recommendations for maximum ventilation and dispersal of foul air, these wards played a crucial role in improving healthcare standards. As we gaze upon this monochrome image, we are transported back to the bustling streets of Victorian London. The River Thames flows peacefully beneath Westminster Bridge while steps lead down to its riverbank. This picturesque scene showcases both architectural marvels against the backdrop of a rapidly developing city. With its rich history and stunning architecture, this print serves as a testament to British civil engineering excellence during the 19th century. It encapsulates not only a significant geographical feature but also highlights advancements made in healthcare facilities during that era. A true gem from our past preserved through artistry and captured forever on paper by an unknown creator alongside esteemed architects Henry Currey and Thomas Page.
