The Village Fair, c1780-1825. Creator: Thomas Rowlandson

The Village Fair, c1780-1825. " Buy a song, one penny..." - one of the street cries in England during Rowlandsons time. His crowd, beautifully composed, gives us as principal figures the performers and the attentive few; there are bystanders in small groups, while others are generally restless and disinterested. Control of composition is as vital an element in the artists technical equipment as his perception and understanding of each individual, all of which makes this picture of the fair teem with life and naturalness. The architectural notes in the thatched-roof inn and village church give the picture a high degree of local atmosphere...fashioned from his lavish store of material collected during Rowlandsons extensive travels through the boroughs and hamlets of England. From " The Watercolour Drawings of Thomas Rowlandson from the Albert H. Wiggin Collection in the Boston Public Library" with commentary by Arthur W. Heintzelman. [Watson-Guptill Publications, Inc. New York, 1947]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "The Village Fair" transports us back to the bustling streets of England during the late 18th to early 19th century. Created by the talented artist Thomas Rowlandson, this artwork beautifully captures the essence of a fair day in a small village. In this lively scene, we are immediately drawn to the performers and their audience as they engage in an exchange of entertainment for just one penny. The composition skillfully highlights these central figures while also showcasing various groups of bystanders who range from curious onlookers to restless individuals seemingly uninterested in the spectacle before them. Rowlandson's meticulous attention to detail is evident not only in his portrayal of each individual but also in his depiction of local architecture. The thatched-roof inn and village church add a touch of authenticity and create a strong sense of place, immersing us further into the vibrant atmosphere. It is worth noting that Rowlandson's ability to compose such dynamic scenes stems not only from his technical expertise but also from his extensive travels throughout England's boroughs and hamlets. This rich collection of experiences undoubtedly influenced his artistic vision and allowed him to infuse this picture with life-like naturalness. "The Village Fair" print serves as both a visual delight and a historical treasure, offering us a glimpse into an era long past. It stands as a testament to Rowlandson's mastery as an artist and reminds us that even centuries later, art has the power to transport us across time and space.
