The Victor of Blenheim, 1897. English soldier and statesman John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722) commanded the British and allied forces in the War of the Spanish Succession. On 13 August 1704 his men defeated the French at the Battle of Blenheim (at Blindheim in Germany). A grateful Queen Anne rewarded Marlborough with a palace at government expense, named Blenheim Palace.
