This black and white glass 8 x 10 inch dry plate negative captures the U.S.S. Brooklyn's ship's company between 1896 and 1899. The Brooklyn was a cruiser of the United States Navy, commissioned during the late 19th century when the U.S. Navy was expanding and modernizing its fleet. The image shows a group of sailors and marines, dressed in their uniforms, gathered on the deck of the Brooklyn. Some are standing at attention, while others are seated or engaged in various activities. In the background, lifeboats are visible, hung from the ship's sides, ready for use in case of emergency.
