EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the remarkable journey of Stella Court Treatt and her beloved monkey, Kima, in East Africa during 1925. Taken by artist Thomas A Glover, this image is part of the iconic book "Cape to Cairo" which chronicles Stella's groundbreaking expedition from Cape Town to Cairo alongside her husband Major Chaplin Court Treatt. In this snapshot, we see a fearless Stella holding Kima close to her chest while standing against the backdrop of Dodoma to Mongalla. The bond between woman and animal is evident as they embark on their wild adventure through the African continent. As one of the first successful journeys by motor vehicle from Cape Town to Cairo, Stella's story represents courage, determination, and exploration. Stella was gifted two grey monkeys during their expedition near Victoria Falls - Kima being one of them. These playful companions added an element of charm and curiosity throughout their travels. This photograph not only showcases the beauty of wildlife but also highlights Stella's role as a trailblazing female explorer in a time when such endeavors were rare for women. Thomas A Glover skillfully captures this moment in monochrome detail, emphasizing both the strength and vulnerability present within these pioneers. With its historical significance and artistic composition, this print serves as a testament to British adventurism in early 20th-century Africa.
