St Peters Square and Basilica and the Vatican, Rome, Italy. Artist: Underwood & Underwood
St Peters Square and Basilica and the Vatican, Rome, Italy. St Peters Square was designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and built between 1656 and 1667. At the centre of the piazza stands an Ancient Egyptian obelisk dating from the 13th century BC, which was brought to Rome in the 1st century to stand at the centre of the Circus of Nero. Built on what tradition holds is the site of the martyrdom of St Peter, the first Pope, St Peters Basilica replaced a previous basilica built by the Emperor Constantine in 324. The current basilica was begun in 1506 during the papacy of Julius II and was completed under Paul V in 1615. The dome, one of Romes most prominent landmarks, was designed by Michelangelo, and completed after his death by his student, Giacomo della Porta. Stereoscopic card detail

This print captures the grandeur of St Peters Square and Basilica in Vatican City, Rome. Designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and built between 1656 and 1667, the square is a testament to his architectural genius. At its center stands an Ancient Egyptian obelisk dating back to the 13th century BC, brought to Rome in the 1st century AD. The magnificent St Peters Basilica dominates the scene, replacing a previous basilica constructed by Emperor Constantine in 324. Construction on the current basilica began in 1506 under Pope Julius II's papacy and was completed in 1615 during Paul V's reign. The iconic dome, designed by Michelangelo himself but finished posthumously by his student Giacomo della Porta, proudly adorns Romes skyline. In this stereoscopic card detail captured by Underwood & Underwood, we witness women dressed in traditional costumes adding a touch of elegance against the backdrop of these historic structures. This image not only showcases remarkable architecture but also highlights Italy's rich religious heritage as Catholicism permeates every aspect of life within Vatican City.
