The Sacrifice of Isaac, c. 1527. Creator: Andrea del Sarto (Italian, 1486-1530)
The Sacrifice of Isaac, c. 1527. In this dramatic test of faith from the Old Testament book of Genesis, Abraham agrees to slay his son Isaac on Gods command. As Abraham raises the knife, an angel suddenly appears to halt the sacrifice. This work gains its power from the complex expressions of father and son, combining grief, strength, resignation, fear, and realization in their faces and bodies, the latter inspired by ancient sculpture and Michelangelo. Andrea del Sarto never finished this painting, and it lays bare his working methods. He transferred the design to the panel from a drawing, reinforcing the chalk with painted lines--best seen in the donkey at the far right. He then worked over the whole panel at once with thin, brushy veils of colour, letting him alter the composition while painting--especially evident in the angel, Isaacs body, and Abrahams head

The Sacrifice of Isaac, c. 1527
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that captures the intense moment from the Old Testament when Abraham's faith is put to an ultimate test. Painted by Italian artist Andrea del Sarto, this masterpiece showcases the raw emotions and intricate details that make it truly remarkable. As we gaze upon this painting, we witness Abraham raising his knife above his beloved son Isaac, who looks up at his father with a mix of fear and resignation in his eyes. The expressions on their faces convey a range of emotions - grief for what must be done, strength to carry out God's command, and realization that their lives are about to change forever. Andrea del Sarto's skillful use of color and brushwork brings depth and movement to the composition. Inspired by ancient sculpture and Michelangelo himself, he meticulously crafted every detail - from the folds in their garments to the angel descending from above. Interestingly, this artwork remains unfinished, revealing del Sarto's working methods. We can see how he transferred his initial design onto the wooden panel using painted lines over reinforced chalk sketches. This technique allowed him to alter elements of the composition as he painted. Displayed at The Cleveland Museum of Art today, "The Sacrifice of Isaac" continues to captivate viewers with its powerful storytelling and masterful execution. It serves as a testament not only to Andrea del Sarto's talent but also as a reminder of Abraham's unwavering faith in God's divine plan.
