The River God Tiber (Study for a fresco, Miracle of the Snow... Florence), 1589. Creator

The River God Tiber (Study for a fresco, Miracle of the Snow, or the Foundation of Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome in the Canigiani chapel of S. Felicita, Florence), 1589. Since ancient times, artists have depicted river gods as reclining bearded men, often holding or leaning on a large urn pouring water. This example, a preparatory sketch for a painting, personifies the Tiber River, which plays a role in Romes legendary origins. Romulus, the founder of Rome, and his twin brother, Remus, were abandoned as infants at the river, where they were rescued by a she-wolf. Poccetti lightly sketched the animals head behind the river god along with the face of Romulus or Remus

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable study for a fresco titled "The River God Tiber" by Bernardino Poccetti, created in 1589. The image depicts the traditional representation of river gods as reclining bearded men, with the River God Tiber personified in this particular artwork. Holding or leaning on a large urn pouring water, he symbolizes the vital role that the Tiber River played in Rome's legendary origins. According to ancient mythology, Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were abandoned as infants near the riverbank. Miraculously saved by a she-wolf who nurtured them until they were found and raised by humans, their story is deeply intertwined with the significance of the Tiber River. In this preparatory sketch for a painting, Poccetti masterfully captures both elements of nature and human figures. Behind the majestic river god lies an intricately sketched head of an animal - perhaps representing the protective she-wolf - along with either Romulus or Remus' face. Rendered using black chalk on antique laid paper, this drawing exemplifies Poccetti's skillful technique and attention to detail. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art under Heritage Art/Heritage Images collection, this print invites viewers to appreciate not only its artistic beauty but also reflect upon Rome's mythical past and its enduring influence on Western civilization.
