Prince Charming and the Sleeping Beauty, 1912. Artist: Leonard Raven-Hill
Prince Charming and the Sleeping Beauty, 1912. Prince Charming, representing Sir Edward Grey (lst Viscount of Fallodon) British Foreign Secretary 1905-1916 prepares to wake the sleeping figure of Peace after the signing in London of an armistice to end hostilities in the First Balkan War, fought between the Turkish Ottoman Empire and the Balkan League, consisting of Bulgaria, Greece, Serbia and Montenegro. Unfortunately peace was short-lived: a coup by the Young Turks in January 1913 led to Turkey recommencing hostilities, which continued until the Turks were defeated, losing virtually all their remaining European territories. A treaty ending the war was concluded in London in May 1913. From Punch, or the London Charivari, 25 December, 1912

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "Prince Charming and the Sleeping Beauty, 1912" we are transported back to a significant moment in history. The artist, Leonard Raven-Hill, beautifully captures the allegorical figure of Prince Charming representing Sir Edward Grey, the British Foreign Secretary during 1905-1916. The scene depicts Prince Charming standing before a sleeping figure of Peace after the signing of an armistice to end hostilities in the First Balkan War. This war was fought between the Turkish Ottoman Empire and the Balkan League consisting of Bulgaria, Greece, Serbia, and Montenegro. However, despite their efforts for peace, it was short-lived as a coup by the Young Turks led to Turkey recommencing hostilities. Raven-Hill's engraving skillfully portrays this historical event with intricate details such as feathers symbolizing peace and birds surrounding them. The image also showcases a bedroom setting with delicate furniture and clothing that adds depth to its visual storytelling. This thought-provoking artwork serves as a reminder of how fragile peace can be in times of conflict. It highlights both hope for resolution and disappointment when those hopes are shattered by unforeseen circumstances. "Prince Charming and the Sleeping Beauty" is not just an enchanting piece but also an important commentary on politics and war during early 20th-century Europe.
