Portrait of Empress Catherine II, 18th century. Artist: Vigilius Erichsen
Portrait of Empress Catherine II, 18th century. Catherine the Great (1729-1796), who came to the throne in 1762. A German princess, Catherine was chosen at the age of 14 to be the wife of Peter III of Russia. The marriage was a failure and Catherine conspired with a group of nobles including her lover, Count Orlov, to depose the Tsar, with Catherine ruling in his stead. Her reign saw Russia take an increasing role in European affairs and expand its empire with the addition of the Crimea and much of Poland. EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait print showcases Empress Catherine II, also known as Catherine the Great, during the 18th century. Painted by Vigilius Erichsen, this artwork captures the essence of a powerful and influential woman who left an indelible mark on Russian history. Catherine's journey to power began when she was chosen at just 14 years old to marry Peter III of Russia. However, their marriage proved disastrous, leading Catherine to conspire with nobles and her lover Count Orlov to overthrow her husband and take control herself. Thus began her reign as Empress of Russia. Under Catherine's rule, Russia flourished both domestically and internationally. She expanded the empire's territories by acquiring Crimea and significant parts of Poland. Her leadership saw Russia become increasingly involved in European affairs, solidifying its position as a major player on the global stage. In this portrait, we see Catherine exuding confidence and regality befitting a monarch. The artist skillfully captures her commanding presence through intricate details such as her elaborate dress adorned with rich colors and fine fabrics. Today, this remarkable piece is housed in the Regional Art Gallery in Vologda, Russia—a testament to Catherine's enduring legacy. It serves as a reminder of her extraordinary life filled with ambition, determination, and an unwavering commitment to shaping not only Russian history but also Europe itself.
