Porphyry ewer, 1468-1491, (1881). Creator: R I Stevenson

Porphyry ewer, 1468-1491, (1881). Etching of a lidded ewer made in Mechelen, Flanders, by Seger van Steynemoelen, mid-late 15th century. This ewer is made of silver mounts, incorporating an ancient, probably Roman, green porphyry vase dating from between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD. The spout is in the form of a gaping dragon. From " The South Kensington Museum", a book of engraved illustrations, with descriptions, of the works of art in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (formerly known as the South Kensington Museum). [Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington, London, 1881]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable Porphyry ewer, created between 1468-1491. The etching was skillfully executed by R I Stevenson in 1881, as part of the book "The South Kensington Museum". This exquisite piece originates from Mechelen, Flanders, crafted by Seger van Steynemoelen during the mid-late 15th century. The ewer itself is a true testament to craftsmanship and artistry. It features silver mounts that beautifully incorporate an ancient green porphyry vase dating back to either the 1st century BC or AD - a relic from Roman times. One cannot help but marvel at its intricate details and historical significance. Notably, the spout of this magnificent artifact takes on an extraordinary form - that of a gaping dragon. This unique design element adds an air of mystique and fantasy to an already awe-inspiring creation. Through this photograph print, we are transported back in time to appreciate the beauty and ingenuity of medieval metalwork. The Porphyry ewer stands as a tangible link between different eras: ancient Rome's influence on Flemish craftsmanship during the Renaissance period. As we admire this image captured by R I Stevenson over a century ago, it serves as a reminder of our rich cultural heritage preserved within museums like Victoria & Albert (formerly known as South Kensington Museum). Such artifacts continue to inspire us with their timeless allure and artistic excellence.
