October - feeding pigs on acorns, 15th century, (1939). Creator: Robinet Testard

October - feeding pigs on acorns, 15th century, (1939). A peasant couple practice pannage - the releasing of domestic pigs into woodland to feed on acorns or beechnuts. The man, armed with a long stick, knocks nuts out of the trees for the pigs to forage, while his wife seems to stroke a pig lying on the ground. Pannage was very important for rural areas in the Middle Ages as the quickly-fattened pigs could get through the winter, or they could be slaughtered earlier than usual. The rooting around also turned the ground over, releasing nutrients for plant growth. Detail of a page from the " Heures de Charles d Angouleme", a book of hours commissioned by Charles of Orleans (1459-1496), with miniatures mostly painted by Robinet Testard, and now in the Bibliotheque nationale de France in Paris. Published in " Verve - No. 8, Vol. II". [Verve, France, 1939]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "October - feeding pigs on acorns, 15th century" takes us back in time to witness a rural scene from the Middle Ages. Created by Robinet Testard in 1939, this image captures a peasant couple engaging in the practice of pannage – releasing domestic pigs into woodland to feast on acorns and beechnuts. In the picture, we see the man armed with a long stick, skillfully knocking nuts out of trees for the hungry pigs to forage. Meanwhile, his wife tenderly strokes one of the contented swine lying on the ground. Pannage held immense significance during this era as it ensured that these quickly-fattened pigs could survive through winter or be slaughtered earlier than usual. Beyond its practical benefits, pannage also had ecological advantages. The rooting around by these animals turned over the ground and released nutrients essential for plant growth. This detail is extracted from "Heures de Charles d'Angouleme" a book of hours commissioned by Charles of Orleans (1459-1496) and now housed at Bibliotheque nationale de France in Paris. Published in Verve magazine's eighth edition in 1939, this artwork beautifully showcases Testard's mastery as an illuminator. It transports us to another time and place where daily life revolved around nature's rhythms and humble occupations like pig-rearing sustained communities. Through this photograph print, we are reminded of our connection to history and how even seemingly mundane activities can hold profound cultural significance.
