Twelve Medallions Mounted as a Necklace, c. 1400. Creator: Unknown
Twelve Medallions Mounted as a Necklace, c. 1400. These medallions, which have loops on the backs, must have originally been sewn onto a garment or, more likely, a womans headpiece. In spite of the modern chain to which they are now attached, the medallions are unique items of feminine apparel from around 1400. Such items would have been well known at the courts of the Valois in Paris, Bourges, and Dijon. The central medallion with a " white lady" is enameled " in the round" --a new Parisian technique for enameling irregular or three-dimensional surfaces. Such white lady medallions are described in inventories of the period

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning piece of jewelry from the late 14th to early 15th century. The Twelve Medallions Mounted as a Necklace, created by an unknown artist around 1400, is an exquisite example of feminine apparel during that era. Originally sewn onto a garment or possibly a woman's headpiece, these medallions now adorn a modern chain. Each medallion possesses its own unique charm and elegance. One particularly striking centerpiece features an enameled "white lady" crafted using the innovative Parisian technique for enameling irregular or three-dimensional surfaces. This central medallion stands out among the others with its intricate design and meticulous craftsmanship. These precious medallions would have been highly sought after at the courts of the Valois in Paris, Bourges, and Dijon during their time. Their beauty and significance are further emphasized by their inclusion in inventories from this period. The combination of pearls, enameled gold, and precious stones adds to the allure of this necklace. While some later additions have been made to ensure its preservation, it remains an extraordinary testament to French heritage art. Displayed at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this remarkable piece continues to captivate viewers with its timeless beauty and historical significance. As we gaze upon these twelve medallions mounted on a necklace today, we are transported back in time to appreciate the skillful craftsmanship and artistic vision that went into creating such exceptional jewelry centuries ago.
