Male costume, 15th century, (1910)
Male costume, 15th century, (1910). Mens dress from the time of Edward IV (1461-1483). The style features broad shoulders and a narrow waist, with an extra piece of material given to the sleeve which heightens the effect produced by the mahoitres - pads of moss of flock sewn into the shoulders. In the third year of the reign of Edward IV, this style of padding was prohibited to be worn by any yeoman or person under that degree, with a fine of six and eightpence. The tailor who made them would be fined twenty shillings. No-one under the estate of a lord was allowed to wear poleyns (shoes) more than two inches in length. Illustration from British Costume during 19 Centuries by Mrs Charles H Ashdown, (London, 1910)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a male costume from the 15th century, specifically during the reign of Edward IV in England. The attire showcases the fashion trends of that era, characterized by broad shoulders and a narrow waist. One notable feature is the extra piece of material attached to the sleeve, which enhances the effect created by shoulder pads known as mahoitres. These pads were made by sewing moss or flock into the shoulders, adding volume and structure to this stylish ensemble. Interestingly, in Edward IV's third year as king, wearing such padding was prohibited for anyone below yeoman status. Violators would face a fine of six and eightpence while tailors who crafted these shoulder pads would be fined twenty shillings. Additionally, individuals below lordship were not allowed to wear poleyns (shoes) longer than two inches. This illustration comes from "British Costume during 19 Centuries" by Mrs Charles H Ashdown in 1910. It provides us with a glimpse into medieval male fashion in England during the fifteenth century. The monochrome image adds an air of authenticity to this historical depiction.
