EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Madelon, a character from the theatrical comedy of manners "Les Precieuses Ridicules" written by Jean Baptiste de Moliere. Created in 1868 by Jean Francois Maurice Sand and an unknown artist, this image beautifully captures the essence of Madelon's character and the fashion of the 17th century. Madelon is depicted wearing a stunning ensemble that reflects the style of witty and educated intellectual ladies known as les precieuses. Her dress features a flounced skirt with intricate lace details, emphasizing her elegance and refinement. The bodice highlights her decolletage, while her headdress adds a touch of sophistication to her overall appearance. The play itself was inspired by these fashionable women who frequented the salon of Marquise de Rambouillet during that era. It premiered in 1659 and became one of Moliere's most successful works. This engraving comes from "Oeuvres Completes De Moliere" which includes an introduction by Jules Janin. Published in Paris in 1868 by F. de P Mellado et Cie, it serves as a testament to both Moliere's enduring legacy and his influence on French theater. As we admire this full-length portrait, we are transported back to a time when drama unfolded on stage amidst lavish costumes and intricate sets. This print allows us to appreciate not only Madelon's character but also the artistry behind creating such memorable theatrical experiences.
