Letter from Thomas Wolsey, Archbishop of York to Dr Stephen Gardiner, February or March 1530. Artist: Cardinal Thomas Wolsey
Letter from Thomas Wolsey, Archbishop of York to Dr Stephen Gardiner, February or March 1530. Letter, written from Esher, shortly after Wolseys disgrace, to Gardiner, secretary to Henry VIII, making arrangements as to the benefices in the province of York, and appealing to the Kings compassion on account of his advanced age and long service. Gardiner, as was frequently the case at this period of his life, is addressed as Mr Stevens. The late poor Dean of Wells mentioned in the letter was Thomas Winter, Wolseys natural son. Evidence of the writers weakness and agitation may be seen in his inability to keep the pen from dotting the paper between the words. From the second series of Facsimiles of royal, historical, literary and other autographs in the Department of Manuscripts, British Museum: Series I-V. (London, 1899)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a historical artifact of immense significance - a letter from Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, Archbishop of York, to Dr Stephen Gardiner. Dated February or March 1530, the letter was written during a tumultuous period in Wolsey's life after his disgrace and addressed to Gardiner, who served as secretary to King Henry VIII. In this heartfelt correspondence, Wolsey appeals for the King's compassion due to his advanced age and long service. The letter also discusses arrangements regarding benefices in the province of York. Interestingly, Wolsey addresses Gardiner as "Mr Stevens" which was common at that time. The vulnerability and agitation experienced by the writer are evident in the ink dots scattered between words on the paper. These imperfections provide a glimpse into Wolsey's state of mind during this challenging phase. Notably mentioned within the letter is Thomas Winter, identified as Wolsey's natural son and late poor Dean of Wells. This detail adds an intriguing personal touch to an otherwise formal document. With its rich colors and intricate handwriting, this facsimile captures not only historical importance but also evokes emotions such as worry, anxiety, and compassion. It serves as a reminder of religious influence during the sixteenth century when Christianity played a significant role in political affairs. Preserved through time with great care by Heritage Images' collection, this remarkable piece offers us insight into Cardinal Thomas Wolsey's world while shedding light on key figures like King Henry VIII and Stephen Gardiner.
