The Hut at Cape Adare, c1911, (1913). Artist: G Murray Levick
The Hut at Cape Adare, c1911, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures "The Hut at Cape Adare" during the Terra Nova Expedition led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott in 1911. The expedition, which aimed to reach the South Pole and conduct scientific research, consisted of a diverse team of experts including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, ski experts, meteorologists, and physicists. Scott's ambition was to continue his previous scientific work from the Discovery Expedition while also becoming the first person to reach the geographic South Pole. However, upon reaching their destination on January 17th, 1912 after enduring treacherous conditions and dwindling supplies due to blizzards along the way; they discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had already beaten them by a month. Tragically delayed and facing severe hardships on their return journey, Scott and his remaining team members - Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans - succumbed to exhaustion and extreme weather conditions at the end of March. Their bodies were eventually found eight months later alongside their poignant diaries. "The Hut at Cape Adare" stands as a testament to both human determination in pursuit of knowledge and exploration in one of Earth's most unforgiving environments. This photograph is part of "Scott's Last Expedition". Volume II published by Smith Elder & Co. , London in 1913 – an invaluable historical record documenting this ill-fated but remarkable journey into Antarctica's icy heart.
