Envy, 1593. Creator: Jacob Matham (Dutch, 1571-1631)

Envy, 1593. In this print, which comes from a series of fourteen engravings, Envy is shown as an old hag eating a heart, a visual metaphor for the expression " eating your heart out" with resentment. Jacob Matham was Goltziuss stepson and pupil and entered his Haarlem workshop in 1581. A highly prolific engraver, Matham produced prints after artists including Michelangelo, Raphael, Abraham Bloemaert (1564-1651), and especially Goltzius. When Goltzius ceased his activities as a printmaker around 1600, Matham took over the workshop

Envy, 1593 - A Haunting Depiction of Resentment

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the essence of envy through the skilled artistry of Jacob Matham. Created in 1593 as part of a series of fourteen engravings, this particular piece portrays Envy as an old hag devouring a heart—an evocative visual metaphor for the phrase "eating your heart out" with resentment. Jacob Matham, stepson and pupil to renowned artist Hendrick Goltzius, entered his workshop in Haarlem at a young age. With remarkable talent and prolific output, Matham became known for producing prints after esteemed artists such as Michelangelo, Raphael, Abraham Bloemaert, and especially Goltzius himself. When Goltzius retired from printmaking around 1600, Matham seamlessly took over his mentor's workshop. In this haunting image captured by Heritage Art/Heritage Images, we witness Matham's mastery in conveying complex emotions through intricate engravings. The intensity on Envy's face is palpable as she devours the heart—a symbol not only of her own bitterness but also a representation of how envy consumes one from within. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing artwork from the Dutch Golden Age (16th century), we are reminded that envy has long plagued humanity across time and cultures. Through its powerful imagery and meticulous craftsmanship, this print invites us to reflect on our own experiences with jealousy while appreciating Jacob Matham
