The Doges Palace, Venice, 1826. Creator: Richard Parkes Bonington (British, 1802-1828)
The Doges Palace, Venice, 1826. At the age of 22, Bonington achieved overnight success at the official (state sponsored) Paris exhibition known as Salon. Two years later, in 1826, he journeyed to Venice, a city that had long attracted landscape artists. At first, constant rain greatly depressed Bonington, but suddenly the weather changed and Venice was at its glorious best. Bonington frequently painted outdoors, capturing immediate impressions of Venetian architecture and sunlight. He made this particular study from a boat anchored in the lagoon near the Doges Palace. The thick swirls of paint, with colours mixed together while still wet, indicates how rapidly the artist worked

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that showcases the remarkable talent of Richard Parkes Bonington. At just 22 years old, Bonington achieved unprecedented success at the prestigious Paris exhibition known as Salon. Two years later, he embarked on a journey to Venice, a city renowned for its picturesque landscapes that had long captivated artists. Initially disheartened by constant rain, Bonington's spirits were lifted when the weather suddenly changed and Venice revealed itself in all its glory. Known for his preference to paint outdoors and capture immediate impressions of his surroundings, Bonington created this study from a boat anchored in the lagoon near the majestic Doges Palace. The painting exhibits Bonington's rapid working style through thick swirls of paint where colors blend together while still wet. This technique not only demonstrates his artistic skill but also reflects the urgency with which he captured the fleeting beauty of Venetian architecture and sunlight. This particular print serves as a testament to Bonington's ability to encapsulate both the grandeur and subtleties of nature within his artwork. It stands as an enduring representation of British heritage art from the 19th century and is proudly housed in The Cleveland Museum of Art collection.
