His clever playing attracted the attention of the leader, (1907). Creator: Unknown
His clever playing attracted the attention of the leader, (1907). The young Schubert makes a friend at the Stadtkonvikt imperial school in Vienna: On the very first day that he took his seat in the orchestra his clever playing attracted the attention of the leader, a big fellow named Spaun, who sat immediately in front of him. On turning round to ascertain who it was that was bringing forth such excellent tone from his fiddle, and, moreover, playing with such precision, Spaun discovered it to be a small boy in spectacles, named Franz Schubert. An episode from the life of Austrian composer Franz Schubert (1797-1828). From " Story-Lives of Great Musicians", by F.J. Rowbotham. [Wells Gardner, Darton & Co. Ltd, London, 1907]

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "His clever playing attracted the attention of the leader, (1907)", we catch a glimpse into a significant moment in the life of Austrian composer Franz Schubert. The image transports us to the Stadtkonvikt imperial school in Vienna, where young Schubert's musical talent is about to make an indelible mark. As he takes his seat in the orchestra for the very first time, Schubert's exceptional skill on his fiddle immediately catches the attention of Joseph von Spaun, the orchestra's leader. Curiosity piqued by such remarkable tone and precision coming from behind him, Spaun turns around only to discover that it is none other than a small boy wearing spectacles named Franz Schubert. This encounter marks not just an episode but also a turning point in Schubert's life. It signifies both recognition and friendship as Spaun becomes captivated by this young prodigy's talent. Little did they know at that moment that their bond would grow stronger over time, shaping not only their personal lives but also leaving an enduring impact on classical music history. Preserved through this black-and-white photograph from 1907, we are reminded of how extraordinary talents can emerge unexpectedly even at tender ages. This image serves as a testament to Schubert's genius and offers us a glimpse into his journey towards becoming one of Austria's most celebrated composers.
