Barton's significant contributions to academia are highlighted by his role as a professor of natural history and botany at the University of Philadelphia for over two decades. His groundbreaking work, "Elements of Botany" published in 1803, holds the distinction of being the first botanical textbook ever printed in the United States. Not only was Barton an accomplished scholar, but he also played a pivotal role behind-the-scenes during Meriweather Lewis' renowned trans-American expedition alongside William Clark from 1803 to 1806.
