Autumn, 1951. Creator: Shirley Markham
Autumn, 1951. Man raking leaves. Shirley Markham (1931-1999) studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950-1952. The writer, artist, poet, and illustrator Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was one of her tutors, and her style of drawing was also influenced by other British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake and Edward Bawden. Markham spent time in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, and also visited Rome, sketching classical buildings. After graduating from Central, she worked as a graphic designer, producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus and programmes. She gave up her promising career however when she got married in 1957. Middle-class women at that time were expected to devote their energies to bringing up children and running the home, and despite her obvious talent, she lacked the confidence to return to illustration. Her portfolio remained in the family attic for many years, but now her work is published here for the first time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Autumn, 1951" captures a serene moment in time. In the image, a man can be seen diligently raking leaves against the backdrop of nature's vibrant autumn colors. The creator of this masterpiece is Shirley Markham (1931-1999), an exceptionally talented artist who studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950 to 1952. During her time at Central, Markham had the privilege of being mentored by Mervyn Peake (1911-1968), a renowned writer, artist, poet, and illustrator. Her artistic style was also influenced by other notable British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake, and Edward Bawden. Additionally, Markham's travels to Italy's Dolomite Mountains and Rome allowed her to sketch classical buildings that further enriched her creative vision. Despite her promising career as a graphic designer producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus, and programs after graduating from Central School of Art; societal expectations during that era led Markham to give up her profession when she married in 1957. Sadly lacking confidence in herself as an illustrator despite undeniable talent hindered her return to the field. For many years following this decision, Markham's remarkable portfolio remained hidden away in the family attic until now. Today marks its long-awaited publication for all art enthusiasts to appreciate and admire this previously unseen body of work from an incredibly gifted artist whose potential was tragically untapped due to societal pressures on middle-class women during that period.
