EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Arlington House, a magnificent stately home located in Westminster, London. Dating back to the 17th century, this architectural gem was originally known as Goring House and stood within the grounds of Buckingham Palace. The first house on this site was constructed in 1624 but tragically burned down later on. In 1675, Henry Bennet, the 1st Earl of Arlington (1618-1685), commissioned the construction of Arlington House. This grand country residence boasted exquisite gardens filled with lush plants and towering trees that provided a serene backdrop for grazing sheep. The image captures the peaceful coexistence between nature and architecture. The monochrome aesthetic adds a timeless quality to this picture, allowing us to appreciate its historical significance even more. It is evident that meticulous restoration efforts have preserved every intricate detail of this remarkable building. Edward Walford's illustration from "Old and New London Illustrated" provides us with a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to c1700 when Arlington House graced Westminster's landscape. This print serves as a testament to Britain's rich heritage and architectural prowess during the Stuart era. As we admire this enchanting scene, let us not forget the visionaries behind such masterpieces - individuals like Henry Bennet who left an indelible mark on British history through their patronage of art and culture.
