The Annunciation, c. 1580. Creator: Paolo Veronese (Italian, 1528-1588); Workshop

The Annunciation, c. 1580. The attribution of this painting had long been in question, but its condition made a proper assessment difficult. A recent cleaning revealed that the doves halo had been partly obscured with overpaint. Moreover, the blue pigment degraded over time, and attempts to clean this area in the past further abraded the surface, but close attention to the remaining original paint allowed for a much more sensitive restoration. In 2012 this painting traveled to a major Veronese exhibition at the Ringling Museum in Sarasota, Florida. The consensus of specialists there was that Veronese created this work in collaboration with his studio hands, with the glittering highlights on the fabric especially characteristic of the artist

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Annunciation" by Paolo Veronese, an Italian artist from the 16th century. For a long time, there was uncertainty surrounding the attribution of this painting due to its deteriorated condition. However, a recent cleaning revealed hidden details that shed light on its true beauty. The doves halo had been partly obscured with overpaint, but careful restoration work unveiled its original glory. Over time, the blue pigment used in the artwork had degraded and previous attempts at cleaning further damaged the surface. Nevertheless, close attention to the remaining original paint allowed for a more sensitive restoration process. In 2012, this remarkable piece traveled to a prominent Veronese exhibition at the Ringling Museum in Sarasota, Florida. Experts gathered at this exhibition agreed that Veronese collaborated with his studio hands to create this masterpiece. One characteristic feature particularly attributed to Veronese is his ability to capture glittering highlights on fabric. Displayed proudly in The Cleveland Museum of Art, this oil-on-canvas painting represents not only Veronese's artistic prowess but also serves as a testament to Italy's rich heritage art tradition. This stunning print by Heritage Art/Heritage Images allows us to appreciate and admire every intricate detail of Veronese's work while preserving it for generations to come.
