EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable Triptych icon of the Virgin and Child with saints, crafted from ivory during the Byzantine era in the 10th century. Measuring at an overall size of 12x23.4x0.9 cm, this exquisite piece is housed in the prestigious Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, USA. Although time has faded its once vibrant colors, faint traces of pigment and gold can still be discerned on this triptych. The panels have been cut down at some point, resulting in a slight misalignment between the wings and central section. This anomaly suggests that this object may have been created by merging two separate earlier pieces together. The intricate carving and relief work on each panel depict various saints surrounding the iconic figures of the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus Christ. Known as Hodegetria or "she who shows the way". Mary's gentle gaze towards her infant son exudes maternal love and devotion. This medieval sculpture holds immense historical significance as it offers a glimpse into Byzantine religious artistry and craftsmanship. Its delicate details evoke a sense of reverence for both religious devotees and art enthusiasts alike. Through this photograph, we are transported back in time to witness an extraordinary fusion of faith, artistic skill, and cultural heritage preserved within this timeless masterpiece.
