Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, Commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main function was to increase sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. One aspect of its activities was a poster campaign that was designed to turn Britons into Empire-conscious consumers.
Over 200 posters were acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s. The posters strong images illustrate the Empire's people, places and products. However, for a contemporary audience, the posters sometimes express uncomfortable beliefs and raise difficult questions about the legacies of the Empire today.); © Manchester Art Gallery

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "And Their Spears, from the series The Empire Stands for Peace" is a powerful representation of the British Empire's desire for peace and unity. Created by an English School artist in the 20th century, this colour lithograph was commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board and printed by Eyre & Spottiswoode for HMSO. The image depicts a group of individuals holding spears that have been transformed into pruning hooks, symbolizing the transformation from weapons of war to tools of growth and prosperity. The accompanying text quotes a biblical passage: "They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: Nation shall not lift up a sword against Nation, neither shall they learn war any more". Manchester Art Gallery in the UK houses an intriguing collection of artist-designed posters commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. These posters aimed to promote sales of goods produced within the British Empire across Great Britain, its Dominions, and Colonies. While these posters showcase strong imagery depicting people, places, and products associated with the empire at that time, they also raise uncomfortable questions about its legacy today. With over 200 acquired posters from this campaign in their possession since the 1930s, Manchester Art Gallery provides viewers with an opportunity to reflect on both positive aspects and challenging realities related to Britain's imperial history. This particular artwork invites contemplation on themes such as peacebuilding efforts within empires and how societies grapple with historical legacies. It serves as a reminder that art can provoke dialogue about complex issues surrounding power dynamics while simultaneously showcasing artistic talent through Bridgeman Images' reproduction available via Fine Art Finder.
