by Lear, Edward (1812-88); 55.4x34.8 cm; Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK; (add.info.: Lake Garda is in northern Italy. Edward Lear recorded on the picture the exact time he sketched the scene - 7-8 am, May 18 1867. He also made pencil notes on the picture to remind him of the colours, which he probably added in the studio. The outlines are strengthened with brown ink, drawn with an extremely fine brush. Lears decorative, line-based approach was unusual in Victorian w/c painting. He was well known for his nonsense poems, but was also a well-respected artist. He spent much of his time travelling;

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enchanting beauty of Desenzano, a picturesque town on the shores of Lake Garda in northern Italy. Created by Edward Lear in 1867, this ink and watercolor masterpiece showcases Lear's unique artistic style and attention to detail. Lear meticulously recorded the exact time he sketched this scene - 7-8 am, May 18th, 1867 - adding an intriguing layer of authenticity to the artwork. He also made pencil notes on the picture to remind himself of the vibrant colors he would later add in his studio. The fine brushwork and decorative lines that strengthen the outlines reveal Lear's unconventional approach to Victorian watercolor painting. While best known for his whimsical nonsense poems, Lear was equally respected as a talented artist who dedicated much of his life to traveling and capturing stunning landscapes like this one. The image showcases towering mountains embracing Lake Garda's tranquil waters, with lush trees dotting its shorelines. It transports viewers back in time to experience the serene atmosphere that inspired Lear over a century ago. Displayed at Newcastle-upon-Tyne's Laing Art Gallery, this remarkable piece is a testament to both Lear's artistic prowess and his deep appreciation for nature's splendor.
