A Young Gentleman, c. 1760-65 (oil on canvas)
3930803 A Young Gentleman, c.1760-65 (oil on canvas) by Gainsborough, Thomas (1727-88); 76.5x63.5 cm; Manchester Art Gallery, UK; (add.info.: Portrait of a young, eighteenth-century man turned to the left slightly but looking towards the viewer. He is depicted wearing a uniform, possibly naval, comprising a dark blue coat with a red collar and metal thread embroidery at the buttonholes, a black bow-tie cravat, lace ruffles at the cuffs, and a grey wig. He is framed in a dark oval, which creates a contrast with the sitter's pale face.
The identity of this sitter is unknown. The uniform he wears is not military but it may be that of a club or society. The painting is dated on stylistic grounds to the period which Gainsborough spent in Bath. This city became a very fashionable resort during the later eighteenth century. It was here that Gainsborough became established as a leading portrait painter.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait, titled "A Young Gentleman" captures the essence of eighteenth-century elegance and mystery. Painted by renowned artist Thomas Gainsborough between 1760 and 1765, this oil on canvas print showcases a young man turned slightly to the left, his gaze fixed upon the viewer with an air of confidence. Dressed in what appears to be a naval uniform, the gentleman dons a dark blue coat adorned with intricate metal thread embroidery at the buttonholes. A striking red collar adds a touch of vibrancy to his ensemble while lace ruffles peek out from beneath his cuffs. His black bow-tie cravat exudes sophistication, complementing his perfectly styled grey wig. Framed within a dark oval shape, this mysterious figure stands out against his pale complexion. Despite our curiosity about who he might be, the sitter's identity remains unknown. The uniform suggests affiliation with a club or society rather than military service. The painting is believed to have been created during Gainsborough's time in Bath when it was becoming an increasingly fashionable resort city in the late eighteenth century. It was here that Gainsborough established himself as one of the leading portrait painters of his time. Displayed at Manchester Art Gallery in the UK, this remarkable artwork offers us a glimpse into both historical fashion and artistic mastery. Its timeless allure continues to captivate viewers today.
