The sketches represent a British soldier of the 3rd (The East Kent) Regiment of Foot (The Buffs) defending a colour, and Polish and French cavalrymen in the service of the Emperor Napoleon, at the Battle of Albuera during the Peninsular War (1808-1814). The figure of the British soldier viewed from the rear is recognisable in the final oil painting as he defends the regimentAs colour.
