5929087 A Fourteenth Light DragoonsA (aquatint, coloured) by Heath, William (1795-1840) (after); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: A Fourteenth Light DragoonsA.
Coloured aquatint by and after William Heath, published by J Watson, Vere Street, Bond Street, London. From an album of 18 aquatints entitled Military Costume of the British Cavalry, 1820.
Dragoons were originally mounted soldiers primarily intended to fight on foot, but by the late 18th century most dragoon regiments had evolved into conventional heavy cavalry units. Others, including the 14th (or Duchess of YorkAs Own), become light dragoon regiments and later hussars. The 13th fought the forces of Napoleonic France in Spain, Portugal and France from 1808 until 1814, when it was shipped back to England. Yet within a few months it was sent to fight in the New Orleans campaign of the War of 1812.); eNational Army Museum; English, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This aquatint print showcases the Fourteenth Light Dragoons, a distinguished cavalry unit from the early 19th century. Created by William Heath and published by J Watson in London, this colored artwork is part of an album titled "Military Costume of the British Cavalry" dating back to 1820. The image depicts a group of dragoons dressed in their striking uniforms, ready for battle. Originally intended as mounted soldiers fighting on foot, dragoon regiments like the Fourteenth had transformed into heavy cavalry units by this time. However, some regiments, including the Fourteenth Light Dragoons (also known as Duchess of York's Own), transitioned into light dragoon regiments and later hussars. During their active years, these brave soldiers fought against Napoleon's forces in Spain, Portugal, and France from 1808 until 1814. After returning to England briefly, they were swiftly deployed to participate in the New Orleans campaign during the War of 1812. This historic print not only captures a moment frozen in time but also pays homage to the valor and dedication exhibited by these troops. It serves as a reminder of their significant contributions to military history and highlights their distinctive uniforms that set them apart on the battlefield.
