EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable button from the 11th Regiment of Bengal Cavalry (Lancers), dating back to the years 1864-1876. Crafted with exquisite detail, this silver and gilt button was created by Firmin and Sons in London. Adorned with the unit's monogram, A BLA, on crossed lances, topped by the majestic Imperial Crown, it is a true testament to the grandeur of this esteemed cavalry. Originally established during the Indian Mutiny in Lahore by Captain Frederick Wale, this regiment underwent several transformations under different commanders. After Wale's passing in 1858, Major Dighton Probyn assumed leadership and renamed it as the 1st Regiment of Sikh Irregular Cavalry. Following its service in China during the 2nd China War (1857-1860), it returned to India in 1861 as the re-designated 11th Bengal Cavalry. Intriguingly, "Lancers" was incorporated into its name in 1864. The regiment continued to evolve over time and eventually merged with the 12th Cavalry in 1921 to become known as the illustrious "5th King Edward's Own Probyn's Horse". Even after India's partition, this legendary cavalry persevered as an armored regiment within Pakistan's military forces named "5th Horse". Preserved within Field Marshal Sir John Chapple Indian Army Collection at London's National Army Museum, this extraordinary button serves as a tangible link between history and artistry. Its intricate design symbolizes not only valor but also pays homage to those who served gallantly under its banner throughout significant periods of conflict and transformation.
