SADKO IN THE UNDERWATER KINGDOM, 1876 (oil on canvas)
7215219 SADKO IN THE UNDERWATER KINGDOM, 1876 (oil on canvas) by Repin, Ilya Efimovich (1844-1930); State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia; (add.info.: 1876//Oil on canvas
In Paris, in 1873, Repine began this work inspired by a traditional Russian poem. It depicts the story of Sadko, a wealthy Novgorod merchant, who falls into the underwater kingdom of the sea tsar; invited to choose between several fiancees, he elects Chernavushka, the Russian girl. Repine worked on this painting for three years, without being satisfied with it. He felt that this fantastic theme, treated with precious details and refined colors, would not be in line with his ambition as a realistic painter. Nevertheless, the artist presented Sadko to the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg on his return in 1876 and received, thanks to this work so foreign to the rest of his production, the title of academician.); Photo © Sylvain Collet

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Ilya Repin's masterpiece, "Sadko in the Underwater Kingdom" painted in 1876. The oil on canvas painting is housed in the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. Repin embarked on this work during his time in Paris, drawing inspiration from a traditional Russian poem. The painting tells the tale of Sadko, a wealthy merchant from Novgorod who finds himself immersed in the underwater kingdom of the sea tsar. Presented with several potential suitors, Sadko chooses Chernavushka, a Russian girl. Despite working on this piece for three years and feeling dissatisfied with it due to its fantastical theme and refined colors not aligning with his realistic style as an artist, Repin decided to present "Sadko" to the Academy of Fine Arts upon his return to St. Petersburg. Surprisingly, he was awarded the title of academician for this unconventional work that diverged from his usual oeuvre. The photograph captures intricate details and vibrant hues found within Repin's painting while also highlighting elements such as seaweed and marine life that contribute to its overall ambiance. This image evokes feelings of imagination and youthfulness through its portrayal of underwater enchantment. Bridgeman Images has expertly captured this iconic artwork by Ilya Repin, allowing viewers to appreciate both its historical significance and artistic brilliance without commercial use or mention thereof.
