In 1884, Repine worked simultaneously on several very large format works. During the summer, he went to Martichkino, not far from Saint-Petersburg. There, he does this outdoor portrait of his twelve-year-old daughter Vera. He chooses an unusual point of view, in a low angle, with a beam of light at an angle, creating a very contrasting image of the girl. Here, Repine remembers the Impressionists seen in Paris and the open-air painting, which reveals the colored shadows.); Photo © Sylvain Collet
