EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodblock print, titled "View of Kuwana" transports us to a serene and picturesque scene in ancient Japan. Created by the renowned artist Kunisada, also known as Toyokuni III, this artwork is a true masterpiece that captures the essence of Japanese culture. The print showcases No. 43 in the series "Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō Road" with its background inspired by Hiroshige's design for the First Tokaido. Against pale brick clouds, we see a woman gracefully walking in clogs and wearing a vibrant blue/green kimono while delicately carrying a black lacquer tray. Outside an inn, another woman can be seen with her child near a brazier, perhaps seeking warmth or enjoying some tea. A peasant rides sidesaddle on his nag nearby, adding movement to the otherwise tranquil setting. Porters carrying empty kagos pass through marshes in the distance. Published by Moriya Jihei (Kinshind?), this print bears Kunisada's signature and is marked with Kiwame censor seal and Mori publisher seal. It is now housed at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery in the UK. Through this artwork, we are transported back in time to experience life along the historic Tōkaidō Road. The attention to detail and skillful execution make it evident why Kunisada remains one of Japan's most celebrated artists.
