EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Major Butler of the 28th (The North Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot in 1855 during the Crimean War. The image, taken by renowned photographer Roger Fenton, is now housed at the National Army Museum in London. Major Butler's regiment had arrived in Crimea with around 800 soldiers, but their numbers were greatly diminished due to casualties and disease. By February 1855, only 50 men remained from the original force that set sail from Liverpool. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by these brave soldiers. Fenton's collection of photographs, which includes this portrait, provides a glimpse into the realities of war during that time period. Each image tells a story and preserves a moment frozen in time. In this particular photo, Major Butler stands tall and proud in his officer uniform. His gaze is steady and determined, reflecting both his leadership qualities and unwavering dedication to duty. As we observe this powerful image today, it serves as a testament to the courage exhibited by Major Butler and his fellow soldiers who fought valiantly for their country amidst challenging circumstances. It also reminds us of the importance of preserving history through photography - capturing not only individuals but also narratives that would otherwise be lost to time.
