Oil on panel by Mrs Elizabeth Butler (1846-1933) (later Lady Butler).
Camels were first domesticated in Arabia over 4, 000 years ago. They provide meat, wool, milk and fuel (their dung can be burnt). Because they are so well adapted to desert conditions, are strong and can walk for miles a day, they have been vital beasts of burden in hot countries: the one-hump Arabian camel or dromedary was used as a pack animal by the British and Indian Armies for many years. Camels have also been used to carry troops at times and, having the advantages of speed and manoeuvrability, they were ideal for surprise attack. Having charged up to the enemy, their troops would then dismount to fight as infantry.
In 1884, a British Camel Corps was formed for the Gordon Relief Expedition to the Sudan, as seen in this picture. In 1915 the Camel Brigade (later the Imperial Camel Corps), made up of British, Indian, Australian and New Zealand troops, was raised for action in the Middle East. Despite their advantages in desert conditions, camels are often difficult to handle, with bad breath and a tendency to bite.); eNational Army Museum; English, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a British soldier of the Camel Corps during the 1st Sudan War in Egypt, circa 1885. Painted by Mrs Elizabeth Butler (later Lady Butler), this oil on panel artwork showcases a study of a brave soldier accompanied by two camels. Camels have been domesticated for over 4,000 years and are renowned for their adaptability to desert conditions. They provide essential resources such as meat, wool, milk, and even fuel from their dung. Due to their strength and ability to cover long distances on foot, camels have played a crucial role as beasts of burden in hot countries. In addition to carrying supplies, camels were also used to transport troops and execute surprise attacks due to their speed and maneuverability. This image depicts the formation of the British Camel Corps specifically created for the Gordon Relief Expedition in Sudan. The Imperial Camel Corps was later established in 1915 with soldiers from Britain, India, Australia, and New Zealand coming together for action in the Middle East. Despite their advantages in desert warfare situations, handling camels can be challenging due to their notorious bad breath and occasional biting tendencies. This remarkable piece not only showcases an important historical moment but also highlights the significance of these magnificent creatures within military operations throughout history.
