EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Royal Munster Fusiliers during the intense British Front-Boer War in South Africa, around 1899. The image showcases a group of soldiers bristling with determination and readiness for battle. Underwood & Underwood, renowned photographers from the late 19th to early 20th century, skillfully captured this historic moment. The Royal Munster Fusiliers played a significant role in the Boer War, with both battalions serving on South African soil. However, their bravery came at a cost as six officers and 75 rank and file members lost their lives due to combat or disease. Additionally, four officers and 79 rank and file soldiers were wounded during this tumultuous period. This photograph is part of a collection titled "South African War through the Stereoscope Pt 2 Vol 1" consisting of 89 stereoscopic cards published by Underwood and Underwood in approximately 1900. These cards provided viewers with an immersive experience that brought the war to life. Preserved by the National Army Museum in London, this image offers us a glimpse into history - showcasing infantry tactics alongside bayonet-wielding soldiers ready for action. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by these brave men who fought valiantly for their country.
