The Assumption of the Virgin, 1526-30 (fresco)
3660852 The Assumption of the Virgin, 1526-30 (fresco) by Correggio, (Antonio Allegri) (c.1489-1534); Duomo, Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, Parma, Emilia-Romagna, Italy; (add.info.: Protector saints of Parma: St. John the Baptist with the lamb, St. Hilary with a yellow mantle, St. Thomas (or Joseph) with an angel carrying the martyrdom palm leaf, and St. Bernard, the sole figure looking upwards.
Below the feet of Jesus, the uncorrupt Virgin in red and blue robes is lofted upward by a vortex of singing or otherwise musical angels. Ringing the base of the dome, between the windows, stand the perplexed Apostles, as if standing around the empty tomb in which they have just placed her. In the group of the blessed can be seen: Adam and Eve, Judith with the head of Holofernes. At the centre of the dome is a foreshortened beardless Jesus descending to meet his mother.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Assumption of the Virgin" a breathtaking fresco painted by Correggio between 1526 and 1530. Located in the Duomo, Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta in Parma, Emilia-Romagna, Italy, this masterpiece is a testament to the artist's skill and creativity. In this image, we see an array of vibrant colors and intricate details that bring the scene to life. At the center of it all is Jesus' mother, the uncorrupt Virgin Mary, adorned in red and blue robes. She is being lifted upwards by a swirling vortex of singing angels who create a heavenly atmosphere around her. Surrounding Mary are various figures including protector saints of Parma: St. John the Baptist with his lamb, St. Hilary with his yellow mantle, St. Thomas (or Joseph) accompanied by an angel carrying a martyrdom palm leaf, and St. Bernard gazing upwards. Below them stand perplexed Apostles reminiscent of those gathered around an empty tomb where they have just placed Mary. Amongst these figures are Adam and Eve as well as Judith holding Holofernes' head. At the heart of this magnificent composition lies Jesus himself - beardless and descending towards his mother from above. This print captures not only Correggio's artistic brilliance but also reveals layers upon layers of symbolism that make "The Assumption of the Virgin" truly awe-inspiring.
