EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the oil on canvas painting titled "A courting messenger from the Viking Harald Harfagre to Gyda" by Nils Bergslien. The artwork, measuring 95x75 cm, is part of a private collection and depicts a significant moment in Norwegian history. The painting portrays Harald Halfdansson, also known as Harald Fairhair, who was the first King of Norway. The story behind this piece revolves around his pursuit of Gyda, daughter of King Eirik of Hordaland. Gyda rejected Harald's marriage proposal, demanding that he become king over all of Norway before she would consider marrying him. To prove his determination and commitment to winning her hand, Harald took an oath not to cut or comb his hair until he achieved sole kingship over Norway. Ten years later, when he finally accomplished this feat, he trimmed his hair and shed the epithet "Shockhead" or "Tanglehair" earning himself a new title. Bergslien beautifully captures this tale through intricate details and vibrant colors on canvas. The image evokes emotions associated with courtship and romance while providing insight into Scandinavian history during the 19th century. Displayed within an interior setting, this artwork transports viewers back in time to witness a pivotal moment in Norwegian culture. It serves as a reminder of love's power to inspire great achievements and highlights the significance of historical narratives in art.
