William Ellis and his daughter Elizabeth, c. 1745

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This oil painting by Francis Hayman captures the tender bond between William Ellis, a London surgeon, and his beloved daughter Elizabeth. Painted around 1745, the portrait showcases five-year-old Elizabeth dressed in a fashionable low-cut dress with a pointed waist, reflecting the styles of both girls and women during that era. The affectionate relationship between father and daughter is beautifully depicted as they sit closely together. William's love for his child radiates from the canvas, emphasizing their strong connection. The landscape setting adds an element of informality to the composition while also hinting at the family's wealth through its depiction of vast land ownership. Hayman's skillful brushwork brings this touching scene to life with meticulous attention to detail. Every stroke highlights not only their physical features but also their emotional connection. The artist masterfully captures Elizabeth's innocence and curiosity as she stands beside her father, surrounded by woodland scenery.
