Etching by Romeyn de Hoogh. Published in Holland.
The deposed king, James II (1633-1701), still had many supporters in Ireland. On 12 July 1690 JamesAs army met the forces of William III (1650-1702) by the Boyne river near the town of Drogheda. Despite stiff resistance, WilliamAs forces eventually broke through the Jacobite centre and right, causing a general retreat. EDITORS COMMENTS
This etching captures a pivotal moment in history - King William III at The Battle of the Boyne on 1 July 1690. Created by Romeyn de Hoogh and published in Holland, this print showcases the intensity and significance of this battle. The scene depicts the deposed king, James II, who still had a considerable number of supporters in Ireland. On that fateful day, James's army clashed with the forces led by William III near the Boyne river close to Drogheda. Despite fierce resistance from James's troops, William's forces eventually managed to break through their center and right flank, leading to a general retreat. While later celebrated as a decisive victory for King William III, it is important to note that Jacobite casualties were relatively light compared to their opponent. Furthermore, most of James's army managed to escape. This artwork not only portrays the grandeur and bravery exhibited during this historic event but also highlights its complex nature. It serves as a reminder that even though battles may be won or lost, they often have far-reaching consequences beyond immediate outcomes. Displayed at the National Army Museum in London, this etching offers viewers an opportunity to delve into one of Europe's significant conflicts while appreciating Romeyn de Hoogh's artistic talent in capturing such an impactful moment on paper.
