EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a rare and exquisite food box known as Jubako, dating back to the Edo Period in Japan (721-1869). Created by an anonymous Japanese artist from the 17th century, this four-tiered square box is a true testament to the craftsmanship of that era. Measuring at 26 x 29 x 23.3 cm, this Jubako is adorned with intricate striped decorations and playing cards. The use of gold, silver, and colored hiramaki-e (low relief lacquer) along with takamaki-e (high relief lacquer) adds depth and richness to its design. Additionally, mother-of-pearl inlays on a black background create a striking contrast. One cannot help but be mesmerized by the scattered Unsun Karuta depicted on this Jubako's surface. These are Japanese playing cards influenced by Portuguese style during the Nanban period. Each card features unique designs including cups, swords, clubs, and knights against various stripe patterns. Preserved through time and captured beautifully in this photograph taken by Fine Art Finder's system administrator (not for commercial use), this extraordinary piece offers us a glimpse into Japan's rich cultural heritage. It serves as a reminder of the artistic mastery achieved during the Edo Period when traditional craftsmanship flourished alongside influences from foreign cultures like Portugal.
