EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a magnificent bowl adorned with the arms of Pope Julius II and the Manzoli of Bologna, surrounded by an array of charming putti, cornucopiae, satyrs, dolphins, and birds. Created in 1508 during the Italian Renaissance by an unknown artist from the Italian School, this exquisite piece measures 32.5 cm in diameter and is currently housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The symbolism within this artwork is rich and significant. The oak tree beneath the papal keys, tiara, acorns, and shields inscribed "IV II" links it to Pope Julius II della Rovere's reign (1503-1512). It is believed that Melchiorre di Giorgio Manzoli received this bowl as a gift due to his role as a loyal supporter of the pope during his triumphant entry into Bologna in 1506. The intricate details on this tin-glazed earthenware are truly remarkable. The workshop of Giovanni Maria Vasaro crafted it with great skill and precision. Inscribed on its surface are words that translate to "Made on September 12th, 1508 at Castel Durante" further adding historical context to its creation. This stunning piece combines elements of spirituality and secularism through its decorative motifs such as wings, cherubs (putti), festoons, grotteschi (monstrous characters), heraldic symbols like shields and coats of arms. Its ornamental design reflects the beauty and grandeur associated with Italian Renaissance art. Overall, this print captures not only a visually striking object but also represents a fascinating intersection between history, artistry, and religious significance.
